Sandor attended the Grammar school of Reformed College in the town of Pápa and graduated from there in 1950. Then he studied at ELTE Institute (Eötvös Loránd University), but dropped his studies because of illness.
Csoori began his career as a staff member at Pápai Néplap (Papa Popular News) from 1949, at Veszprém Megyei Népújság (Veszprem County Popular Newspaper) from 1949, at Szabad Ifjúság (Free Youth) from 1952, at Irodalmi Újság (Literary News) in 1953-1954. He also headed poetry section at Új Hang (New Voice) in 1955-1956. Csoori was a dramaturg at Hungarian Film Studio from 1971. In 1988 he was co-editor with Gáspár Nagy, of Hitel, and in 1992 editor-in-chief. Csoóri died at the age of 86 after a long illness on 12 September 2016.
Sándor Csoóri worked for various political and literary journals in Hungary during his career, but as a harsh critical of the Communist system, the authorities soon noticed that he was not one of their supporters. Csoóri wrote criticizing the dictatorship’s impact of personality, and the fate of rural people.
Sándor Csoóri was a member of Illyes Gyula Foundation (chair), World Federation of Hungarians (president). In 1980 he joined opposition movement. In 1987 he was a founding member of Hungarian Democratic Forum.
