Roger Rees was born on May 5, 1944, in Aberystwyth, Wales. He was the son of William John and Doris Louise Rees.
Roger Rees attended Camberwell School of Art (now Camberwell College of Arts) and the Slade School of Fine Art. When his father died, he quit school and took a job painting scenery and playing small roles at the Wimbledon Theatre.
In 1967 Roger Rees joined the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), rising through the acting ranks until 1980, when he starred in Nickleby, which transferred from the West End to Broadway the following year. He moved to New York City in the late 1980s and in 1989 became a United States citizen. From 1981 to 1982 he was a theater instructor at Columbia University. In 1986 Rees was the Hoffman Chair Professor at Florida State University. From 1986 to 1987 he served as a guest artist at Asolo State Theatre. In 1985 he became an associate director of Bristol Old Vic Theatre Company, working until 1987.
He appeared on stage in plays, including Othello, Hamlet, The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, Hapgood, Indiscretions, and his own Double, Double as well as in movies, including Star 80, If Looks Could Kill, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, and Stop! or My Mom Will Shoot, etc. His television appearances include movies such as A Christmas Carol, Charles & Diana: Unhappily Ever After, Titanic (mini-series), The Return of Sam McCloud, and series such as M.A.N.T.I.S. and Cheers.
He served as the artistic director of the Williamstown Theater Festival from 2004 to 2007. Rees returned to the London stage in 2010 to play Vladimir opposite Sir Ian McKellen in Waiting for Godot and again in 2012 in his one-man show, What You Will. Rees left the production in May 2015 due to his illness.
