(Beethoven's piano sonatas form one of the most important ...)
Beethoven's piano sonatas form one of the most important collections of works in the whole history of music. Spanning several decades of his life as a composer, the sonatas soon came to be seen as the first body of substantial serious pieces for piano suited to performance in large concert halls seating hundreds of people. In this comprehensive and authoritative guide, Charles Rosen places the works in context and provides an understanding of the formal principles involved in interpreting and performing this unique repertoire, covering such aspects as sonata form, phrasing, and tempo, as well as the use of pedal and trills. In the second part of his book, he looks at the sonatas individually, from the earliest works of the 1970s through the sonatas of Beethoven's youthful popularity of the early 1800s, the subsequent years of mastery, the years of stress (1812-1817), and the last three sonatas of the 1820s. Composed as much for private music-making as public recital, Beethoven's sonatas have long formed a bridge between the worlds of the salon and the concert hall. For today's audience, Charles Rosen has written a guide that brings out the gravity, passion, and humour of these works and will enrich the appreciation of a wide range of readers, whether listeners, amateur musicians or professional pianists. This book includes a free CD of Rosen performing extracts from several of the sonatas, illustrating points made in the text.

(Dave Burgess, son of a career Marine and the nephew of th...)
Dave Burgess, son of a career Marine and the nephew of the founders of the Mustang Ranch, managed the Mustang, built and owned the last remaining piece of the original brothel and became a Hells Angel when he was 40. Along the way he made friends and enemies. Most of his enemies worked for the government. In July 2007, Dave Burgess was charged with possession of cocaine and marijuana after a supposedly routine traffic stop in Evanston, Wyoming. Forty-five days later the drug charges were dropped and he was arrested instead for possession and interstate transportation of child pornography. One of the children portrayed in what is still the largest kiddie porn collection ever discovered was the 14-year-old daughter of a fellow Hells Angel. Angels throughout the world were outraged. Hells Angels haters and police gloated. Burgess was convicted after a hasty, four day trial and sentenced to 20 years in federal prison. And, he was framed. This book describes how.

Charles Grodin was born on April 21, 1935, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. He is the son of Ted and Lana Grodin.
Grodin studied at the University of Miami and finished it in 1953. He attended Pittsburgh Playhouse School. Grodin studied with Lee Strasberg and Uta Hagen.
At the beginning of his career during the early 1960s, Grodin aimed at building a meaningful career on the New York stage. Grodin debuted as a director and co-author of Hooray! It’s a Glorious Day ... And All That, a satire on the Broadway musical that debuted in 1966 to less-than-enthusiastic reviews. Around this same time, Grodin became one of the most infamous also-rans when he almost secured the role of Benjamin Braddock in 1967’s The Graduate. He lost out to a young Dustin Hoffman when Grodin expressed insult at the low salary producers were offering for the lead. He next appeared as Mia Farrow’s closet Satanist doctor in Rosemary’s Baby, and two years later in a role in the film version of Joseph Heller’s Catch-22.
Nevertheless Grodin starred in The Heartbreak Kid opposite Cybill Shepherd to laudatory reviews. Back on Hollywood's A-list, Grodin was next cast in 11 Harrowhouse, for which he also wrote the screenplay with Jeffrey Bloom; the duo adapted a novel of the same name. The 1974 jewel-heist tale starred Grodin with Candice Bergen but failed to attract an audience.
Grodin found better success with Warren Beatty’s 1978 movie Heaven Can Wait, and again returned to favor among Hollywood executive circles. That year, he was handed a plum project—Paramount had bought the rights to the classic how-to manual, The Joy of Sex, and gave Grodin the job of turning it into a screenplay. He pitched studio executives an idea about a hot-topic screenplay that fictional Hollywood brass can’t seem to figure out what to do with. Paramount was originally supportive, but then backed out. Grodin managed to get the film made starring both himself and Walter Matthau; it appeared in 1985 as Movers and Shakers to mixed reviews.
Grodin continued to act in films but also made another effort at writing for the stage. For his play Price of Fame, which debuted at the Roundabout Theater in New York City in 1990, Grodin addressed the morals and posturings inside the entertainment business.
Grodin continued his career as a playwright with a revised version of The Opening, which premiered as One of the All-Time Greats in New York in 1992. He added an entire act, but the story remained essentially the same: the torturous rehearsal path of a doomed play. The central characters are the producer and director, along with their wives, who meet at a Chinese restaurant nightly to formulate new strategies prior to opening night.
Later, Grodin’s appearances on David Letterman became legendary; he appeared angry and uncooperative, unwilling to promote his latest movie or book, the ostensible reason for his being there. In We’re Ready for You, Mr. Grodin, the actor recounts experiences on both the Tonight Show and Late Night sets, and reveals what many viewers suspected—that his hosts played along with the hostile act.
From 1995 to 1998, Grodin hosted his own issues-oriented talk show, The Charles Grodin Show, on CNBC and, starting in 2000, became a political commentator for 60 Minutes II. In 2004, Grodin wrote The Right Kind of People, an Off-Broadway play about co-op boards in certain buildings in Manhattan. Grodin's commentaries continue to be heard on New York City radio station WCBS and other affiliates of the CBS Radio Network, as well as on the CBS Radio Network's Weekend Roundup.
He is also a best-selling author; his works include It Would Be So Nice If You Weren't Here, Just When I Thought I'd Heard Everything: Humorous Observations on Life in America and How I Get Through Life. His book, If I Only Knew Then...Learning from Our Mistakes was released in November 2007 by Springboard Press. His book How I Got To Be Whoever It Is I Am came out in April 2009.
