Doctor rerum naturalium, Charles University, Prague, 1950. Professor, Charles University, Prague, 1965. Computer Sciences Corporation, Mathematics Institute Academy, Prague, 1955.
Doctor of Science, Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, Prague, 1963.
His article, "Algebraic Connectivity of Graphs", published in the Czechoslovak Mathematics Journal in 1973, established the use of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian matrix of a graph to create tools for measuring algebraic connectivity in algebraic graph theory. Since then, this structure has become essential to large areas of research in flocking, distributed control, clustering and image segmentation.
Member of American Mathematics Society, International Linear Algebra Society (Hans Schneider prize 1993), Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (correspondent B. Bolzano Gold medal 1986), Union Czech Mathematicians and Physicists (honorary).
