Dance training received at Sadler's Wells School, London. Doctor (honorary), University Edinburgh, 1976.

Career

Founding member, dancer Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet, London, 1946. Dancer, then choreographer Sadler's Wells Ballet, 1952-1966. Director Deutsche Oper Ballet, Berlin, 1966-1969.

Resident choreographer, director The Royal Ballet, London, 1970-1977, principal choreographer, 1977-1992. Artistic associate American Ballet Theatre, New York City, 1984-1992.
