(Former ambassador to Kenya and president of Lincoln Cente...)
Former ambassador to Kenya and president of Lincoln Center Glenn W. Ferguson has kept a journal for 22 years. One issue that has sustained his interest throughout the decades is the conflicting views of nonbelievers and religious believers, and the paradoxical attitudes that result from the clash of increasingly secular, international trends with traditional belief systems. This book is a compilation of brief essays culled from this journal, all on the subject of religion. Ferguson begins with a "Credo of the Ignored," a profession of nonbelief to counter the oft-heard professions of faith trumpeted from every pulpit and reported in the media. He then offers critical commentary on major theological issues: the nature of God, heaven and hell, miracles and sin, as well as social and political topics, such as religion in education, democracy and religion, population control, abortion, euthanasia, funeral rites, and even the esthetics of places of worship. Since religion is a pervasive aspect of society, Ferguson argues, it must be subject to critical scrutiny like any other generalizing theory or philosophy that is offered for public consumption. Tilting at Religion is designed to encourage the open-minded reader to raise probing questions about religion in the interest of enlightenment.

(Culture, politics, education, religion, flora, fauna, and...)
Culture, politics, education, religion, flora, fauna, and vivid descriptions of many exotic landscapes are explored with a large dash of humor as the author takes us along for a fascinating tour of twelve countries that have been a vital part of his life and career. Starting in India in 1984 with the assassination of Indira Gandhi, the author ignores the usual 'tour' theme and concentrates on people and events that provide substantive meaning and a place in history. In the Sudan, the Sharia legal system comes alive in a Moslem country. We have a front row seat as the author describes fundamental changes in Kenya where he served as American Ambassador. In Niger, he joined his wife, Patti, where she was assigned as an arts and crafts consultant at the National Museum. As a consultant to the Executive Service Corps, Mr. Ferguson prepared a definitive plan to launch a new university in Uruguay. In China, as a member of the first accredited bird-watching excursion, he watched the throbbing culture of the rural areas. He enjoyed the flora and fauna in the rain forests of Costa Rica, the mountains and coasts of the South Island in New Zealand, and the rare Orangutans in the independent country of Sabah in northern Borneo. In a short visit to Hungary, as the former President of Radio Free Europe--Radio Liberty, he experienced the impact of lifting the Iron Curtain. After a gap of forty years, he author absorbs the remarkable changes in Bangkok, Thailand where he directed the exciting Peace Corps program. In the last chapter, he brings to life the snow capped Himalaya Mountains and the beautiful valleys of culturally exciting Bhutan. Come along. You'll enjoy the trip and acquire an enhanced understanding of the complex world in which we live and enjoy a few laughs along the way.

Here is a sample of the wit and wisdom of Glenn Ferguson: "Interpreting past deeds through current values is more sinful than re-writing history . . . When I speak, that is truth. When you disagree, that is prejudice . . . Originality can only be copied, not taught . . . I have no idea what I want to do when I grow up, but I missed the deadline . . . I am proud of our nation's accomplishments. When I consider its potential, I cry.
