(" At the beginning of the 21st century there is a rare co...)
" At the beginning of the 21st century there is a rare coincidence of profound transformations in a number of areas, in population dynamics, in human settlements, in science and technology, economics, social stratification, in the role and functions of the states and in the global power structure and in governance. The systemic transformation of the former Socialist countries is an important component of the ongoing changes. The volume is based on the author's research in the framework of the Institute for World Economics on specific aspects of the changes. It is focusing on the human dimensions of global transformations. It places the transformations in a broad interdisciplinary context in a world, which is more like a great Tower of Babel than a global village. Political, economic and social conditions vary immensely throughout the world, influenced by the size, natural endowments, development level, economic structure, political and institutional patterns, and competitiveness of the countries. The new state and non-state actors make the system of interests and values more diverse. All these have a major influence on the future of individuals and of the different communities in this watershed time. The book concludes that modern societies do not need old textbook models or other utopias but realistic and humanistic alternatives, with the help of collaborative political and scientific actions. "

(What are the major political, economic, technological, en...)
What are the major political, economic, technological, environmental, and social changes confronting the world today, and what risks do they pose? Given what we know about these changes and risks, what adjustments will have to be undertaken to make the world as peaceful and stable as possible? Drawing on over 30 years' research, the eminent European scholar Mihaly Simai combines a global systems approach with a hard-headed appreciation of political realities as he seeks answers to these two overarching questions. This volume is at once richly informative and profoundly challenging. Unflinching in its diagnosis of the past failures and present inadequacies of global governance, pragmatic in its prescriptions for more effective multilateral cooperation, Simai's work dissects the dimensions and dangers of a world in transition.

(The world economy is undergoing a major transformation as...)
The world economy is undergoing a major transformation as a result of the technological revolution. As the balance of power between nations shifts, so national economic policies have to undergo major upheavals. Simai sets out to explore this process of change by examining the way in which countries are forced to re-interpret their role whilst looking for new opportunities and avoiding new dangers. He presents an Eastern bloc perspective on the issues involved. His analysis extends, in addition, to a consideration of the social implications of this revolution. As new social groups are formed and new skills emerge, underlying political and social structures are subjected to fundamental change. Mihaly Simai is an Hungarian economist. Outside Hungary he has acted as a Fellow of the UN Economic Commission for Europe and as a member of the UN Secretariat at the UN New York Center for Development Planning, Projections & Policies. Past publications on the world economy and global interdependence are numerous.
