Gauthier received a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology in 1973 and a Master of Biological Science degree in 1980 from San Diego State University. In 1984, he was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of California.
Gauthier began his career as a herpetology fellow at California Academy of Sciences in 1983. A year later he took a position of a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan. In 1987, Jacques became a curator at California Academy of Sciences, where he worked until 1996.
Also he served as an adjunct professor at San Francisco State University from 1993 to 1996. Since 1996 Gauthier has been a professor of geology and geophysics and ecology and evolutionary biology at Yale University. Also since 1996 he has served as a curator of vertebrate paleontology and vertebrate zoology at Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale University.
Gauthier is a member of Royal Society, International Society for Phylogenetic Nomenclature, American Society of Ichthyologists & Herpetologists, Society of Vertebrate Paleontology and Society of Systematic Biologists.
On December 19, 1987 Jacques Gauthier married Lynn Barretti. They have a child.
