Ntahobari began his career as a teacher of mathematics at various universities in Butare and Kigali in 1967 and held it for fourteen years. In 1971, he was appointed a deputy director at the Institute of Pédagogigue National. Then in 1974, Maurice became an inspector of math and general director at the Ministry of Education.
Also he served as a director at the Institute of Pédagogigue National from 1976 to 1981. In 1981, Ntahobari held a position of a minister of higher education, science research and culture at the Ministry of Education, where he worked for a year. In 1982, he became a speaker of National Council for Development in Rwandan Parliament. Since 1989 Maurice has been a rector at National University of Rwanda.
On November 9, 1968 Ntahobari married Pauline Nyiramasuhuko. They have 4 children.
