Zeldov was born on July 28, 1957 in Riga, Latvia; the son of Meir and Sara (Fidelman) Zeldov. He arrived in Israel in 1971.

Zeldov was born on July 28, 1957 in Riga, Latvia; the son of Meir and Sara (Fidelman) Zeldov. He arrived in Israel in 1971.
Zeldov received a Bachelor of Science degree from Technion - Israel Institute of Technology in 1978. Nine years later he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the same institute.
Zeldov served as a captain in Israel Defense Forces from 1978 to 1983. He began his career as an instructor at Technion - Israel Institute of Technology in 1983. Three years later he took a position of a lecturer at the same institute. Then in 1988, Eli became a postdoctoral fellow at International Business Machines Corporation.
In 1992, he was appointed a senior scientist of the Department of Condensed Matter Physics at Weizmann Institute of Science. Also Eli served as an associate professor at that university from 1996 to 2001. Since 2001 Zeldov has been a professor of physics at Weizmann Institute of Science.
Zeldov is a member of Australian Psychological Society, Israel Physical Society, International Union of Pure and Applied Physics.
On April 1, 1987 Eli Zeldov married Adriana Uriel. They have four children.
