This volume, first published in 1971, provides a transcription, detailed description and photograph of each of the 158 then known non-runic inscriptions from the Anglo-Saxon period, dating mainly from 700-1000. The majority come from the north of England, but some are from southern England and a few from continental Europe with Old English texts. The list also includes some which were known to exist after 1800 but which have since been lost. The majority of items are carved on stone monuments, but others are on metal, wood or bone. Inscriptions are in Latin, Old English or a combination of the two. The items are listed alphabetically by location, but also indexed by county, and by current location if different from where they were found. The extensive bibliography further enhances the usefulness of the book, which remains the standard work on the topic.
