Kay Fanning was born Katherine Woodruff on October 18, 1927 in Joliet, Illinois, United States to Frederick William Woodruff, a bank president, and Katherine Bower (Miller) Woodruff.
Sent to private school, Kay later graduated from Smith College.
Fanning began her career in publishing after marrying Marshall Field IV.
In the aftermath of the break-up of her marriage Fanning struggled to make a living. She moved herself and her children to a less affluent section of Chicago and worked on causes such as the civil rights movement.
Fanning began work as a librarian on the Anchorage Daily News shortly after arriving in Anchorage in 1965. She also met and married her second husband and the couple purchased the Daily News together in 1967. The pair quickly established a reputation for maverick editorial positions.
In 1983 Fanning left the Daily News for a position as editor of the Christian Science Monitor. She held that position for five years, during which time she revived the paper's reputation as a world-class source of news reporting. However, although the Monitor gained over twenty thousand new subscriptions during Fanning's tenure, it continued to lose money. In 1988, when the mother church's board of directors adopted a longrange plan significantly reducing editorial freedom, she resigned her position. She died in October 2000 one day after her 73rd birthday.
