conservationist television personality Zoologist
Irwin was born on February 22, 1962 in Essendon, Victoria, Australia; the son of Bob and Lyn Irwin.
Irwin attended Landsborough State School and Caloundra State High School.
Irwin`s parents opened Beerwah Reptile and Fauna Park in 1970. He helped his parents and took part in daily animal feeding, as well as care and maintenance activities. Steve worked as a volunteer for Queensland's East Coast Crocodile Management program in the early 1970s. In addition, Irwin helped his dad catch small problem crocodiles hanging around boat ramps by jumping on them in the water and wrestling them back into the dinghy. Then in 1980, the park was renamed the Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park. Eleven years later Irwin took over the management of the park and renamed it Australia Zoo in 1998.
In the 1980s, Irwin spent months on end living in the most remote areas of far North Queensland catching problem crocodiles. He worked with his dog, Sui, and developed crocodile capture and management techniques that are now utilized with crocodilians around the world. Irwin recorded some of his exploits on tape using a video camera mounted on a tripod. He was hired as a consultant for a television commercial and showed some of the tapes to a producer at Australia’s Channel 10 network, who immediately suggested turning them into a documentary. In the result, it was appeared 10-hour program "The Crocodile Hunter" which first aired in Australia in 1992. His wife Terri Raines was the manager of Steve`s business and conservation projects and also participated directly in the filming of "The Crocodile Hunter" and later documentaries and series.
In 1998, Irwin worked with director Mark Strickson, in order to present "The Ten Deadliest Snakes in the World". Also he appeared on several episodes of "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno". In 2001, Steve appeared in a cameo role in the Eddie Murphy film "Dr. Dolittle 2", in which an alligator warns Dolittle that he knows Irwin is going to grab him and is prepared to attack when he does, but Dolittle fails to warn Irwin in time.
Irwin's only starring feature film role was in "The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course", 2002. In 2005, Irwin provided his voice for th animated film Happy Feet, 2006 as an elephant seal named Trev. The film was dedicated to Irwin, as he died during post-production.
In September 2006, while filming a documentary called The Ocean’s Deadliest near Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, Irwin swam over a venomous bull stingray in shallow water, inadvertently provoking the animal to attack. He was stung in the chest and immediately went into cardiac arrest and he was pronounced dead less than an hour later.
Irwin turned the Australia Zoo into a major tourist attraction. It expanded to 6.5 hectares and 550 animals by 2000 and to 32 hectares and more than 1,000 animals by 2007. Also Steve with his family established large private wildlife refuges in Australia and founded an international organization, Wildlife Warriors Worldwide, to promote wildlife conservation, education, and research.
In 2004, he was recognised as Tourism Export of the Year. In 2009, Irwin was inducted into the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame, recognised for international entrepreneurship both in business and wildlife conservation, significantly contributing to Queensland and its international reputation.

"We don’t own the planet Earth, we belong to it. And we must share it with our wildlife."
"If you can't excite people about wildlife, how can you convince them to love, cherish, and protect our wildlife and the environment they live in?"
"We humans still have a long way to go with learning to live harmoniously with our environment and its wildlife."
