( A new book that celebrates the Jewish life-spiral, fusi...)
A new book that celebrates the Jewish life-spiral, fusing ancient teachings of the Bible and rabbis with new rituals for the twenty-first century More than twenty years ago, Arthur Ocean Waskow published a book, Seasons of Our Joy, that followed the flow of Jewish festivals through the year. It became a classic. Now, in A Time for Every Purpose Under Heaven, Rabbi Waskow and his wife, Phyllis Ocean Berman, have brought us a book for the other great cycle of Jewish life--from birth to death. They have woven handbook and history, spiritual guide and their own personal experience, ancient ceremonies and those brought forward by Jewish women today, into the single pattern of a well-lived life--a unity. The book moves from a new "covenant of washing"--the ritual act of parents washing a newborn daughter's feet to celebrate her arrival--to an examination of how k'tubot, or marriage contracts, could be revised to affirm the commitments partners today need to make with each other, to ceremonies that celebrate the transformations of midlife, to enriching the rituals of grief in order to walk mourners through their own next spiral in the path of their lives.

( Circling the Jewish calendar from Rosh Hashanah to Tish...)
Circling the Jewish calendar from Rosh Hashanah to Tisha B’Av, this lively, accessible guide provides rituals, recipes, songs, prayers, and suggestions for new approaches to holiday observance. Rabbi Arthur O. Waskow explores the meaning of each holiday in relation to the history of the Jewish people and individual spirituality, examines how the place of each holiday in the cycle of the moon and the changing seasons affects the mood of the day, and suggests ritual and spiritual ways to prepare for each festival. In his extensive afterword to this new edition of Seasons of Our Joy, Rabbi Waskow addresses the many changes Judaism has undergone in the last thirty years, as feminist Judaism, neo-Chassidic mysticism, eco-Judaism, and Jewish meditation have newly colored our understanding of the festivals.

(This book is a fusing of what some call neo-conservative ...)
This book is a fusing of what some call neo-conservative and neo-political theory with traditional Christian philosophy and theology. Experiences of the 20th century have demolished the expectations with which modernity began: nowhere is there the same unshakeable belief in historical progress or the invincible power of technology. The author argues that we are in the age of reduced expectations, of limits, of the exhaustion of ideology. The struggle to recover order in the midst of disorder can only be successful, Walsh states, with a transcendent foundation of shared ultimate meaning and value. Walsh explores for the reader the works of Dostoyevski, Solzhenitsyn, Camus and Voeglin, thinkers who have plumbed the depths of this crisis and discovered the existential truth that is capable of overcoming it. The modern experiment of secular humanism has failed. Without God, without moral absolutes, without divine order, the author argues that we end up mired in the 20th century morass of international and local violence, genocide, corruption, meaningless and hopelessness. From the author of "The Mysticism of Innerworldly Fulfilment".
