Background
Carlton Chester Qualey was born in Spring Grove, Minnesota. He was the son of Ole O. Qualey (1858-1937) and Clara Amalia (Knatterud) Qualey (1868-1947), He graduated from Saint Olaf College (1929), earned his Masters from University of Minnesota (1930) and his D. from Columbia University in (1938).
