Charles Henry Goren was born on March 4, 1901 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. Son of Jacob and Rebecca Goren.
He studied in Canada at McGill University, Montreal, and returned to Philadelphia to practice law.
He became fascinated by the game of bridge and was technical assistant to Milton Work, the outstanding authority on auction bridge, at a time when auction bridge was giving way to contract bridge. Goren made a name as a player and teacher of contract bridge. Eventually he held virtually every record of note in tournament play.
From 1933 he won many major titles, including thirty-one national championships, the Spingold Knockout Teams championship in 1944 and 1945; from 1944 to 1962 he stood at the top of the career master-point rankings. He was awarded the McKenney trophy for the top masterpoint winner in a year on eight occasions. He was the only bridge player to win every major bridge championship in the United States.
Goren stressed adaptability and natural tactics rather than systems and artificial conventions and his methods are standard throughout the United States. Goren became a world champion in Bermuda in 1950 as a member of the American team in the first of the Bermuda Bowl series.
In 1933 he succeeded Ely Culbertson as bridge columnist for the Chicago Tribune and the New York Daily News. He also contributed regularly to Sports Illustrated. He wrote voluminously on the subject, publishing some forty books that sold over ten million copies and were translated into many languages.
His "Contract Bridge Complete" (1942) was a classic work and his "Point-Count Bidding" (1949) helped to revolutionize bridge by advocating the point-count system, which displaced the previous honor-trick valuation favored by Culbertson. Goren also starred in the first successful television bridge program, which ran from 1959 to 1964 and was called “Championship Bridge with Charles Goren.” By the 1950s, Goren was known as Mr. Bridge and was featured on a Time magazine cover.
