In 1947 Ivan studied at the Art Center School in Los Angeles, California, United States. In 1949 he studied at the Academie Andre Lhote in Paris, France.
A freelance photojournalist and industrial photographer, Massar worked on assignment for most major magazines, since 1950. His work also appears in several Time-Life books and the World Book Encyclopedia. Ivan works with a 35mm camera for his photojournalism and documentary images. Working with Roy Stryker, Ivan's mentor, he documented the "Story of Steel," coal mining and riverboat transportation, in 1951-1952.
Ivan has two children, Andrea, David.
