Connell was born on October 5, 1923 in Gary, Indiana, United States; the son of Joseph Athanasius Connell and Grace Hurd (Connery) Connell.
Connell received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Chicago in 1946. Seven years later he earned his Master of Arts degree from the University of California. Also in 1956, Joseph was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Glasgow.
Connell began his career as a teacher at McClatchy High School in 1949 and held it for two years. In 1955, he took a position of a research fellow at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. Since 1956 Joseph was a professor at the University of California. Also he held the position of a research fellow at Australian National University. Nowadays Connell is a professor emeritus at the University of California.
Connell’s first research paper examined the effects of interspecific competition and predation on populations of a barnacle species on the rocky shores of Scotland. His paper on "Diversity in tropical rain forests and coral reefs" had made it clear that disturbance have a crucial impacts on the ecological communities.
Connell is a corresponding member of the Australian Academy of Science and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
In June 1949, Joseph Connell married Shirley Dixon. On July 17, 1954 he married Margaret Althea Harvey. They have 4 children.
