( Frank Lloyd Wright: The Lost Years, 1910-1922 uncovers ...)
Frank Lloyd Wright: The Lost Years, 1910-1922 uncovers the real story of Wright's travels in Europe. By examining this elusive and influential period in Wright's development, Alofsin restores an important chapter to the history of modern architecture. Bringing new definition and insight to the story of Frank Lloyd Wright, this book has become a standard work on America's greatest architect. "Alofsin has set out to explain the impact of European culture on Wright by integrating its artistic influence with the tumultuous events in his private life. . . . He succeeds in this ambitious goal."--Kevin Nute, Architects' Journal "This book is illustrated so lavishly . . . produced so beautifully in general that it can double as a coffee-table book."--Virginia Quarterly Review "A convincing and well-documented case that these were in fact crucial and fruitful years in Wright's development as an architect. . . . Absorbing."--Catherine Maclay, San Jose Mercury News "One of the best."--Robert Fulford, Toronto Globe and Mail

( A history of modernism in the teaching of architecture,...)
A history of modernism in the teaching of architecture, landscape architecture, and city planning at Harvard. This remarkable volume tells the unique history of modernism as reflected in the teaching of architecture, landscape architecture, and city planning at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design. Tracing developments at the GSD, which was home from 1937 to 1952 of Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius, Anthony Alofsin reveals that America had initiated its own modern agenda before the arrival of the European modernist ideology. Filled with archival photographs and plans that have never been published before, this book will be of great interest to students and professionals in the fields of art, architecture, and design, as well as to architectural historians. 20 color and 250 black and white illustrations; plans

Prairie Skyscraper traces the history and evolution of Wright's recently restored nineteen-story-skyscraper masterwork, which takes its place beside the S.C. Johnson Wax Research Tower as one of Wright's only two vertical structures-and, at 221 feet tall-his largest. Built as a multi-use skyscraper in 1956, the building is now a luxury hotel and arts center, featuring collections of the works of Bruce Goff and Frank Lloyd Wright, and soon a new museum facility designed by Zaha Hadid. Now, with all-new color photography, we are given access to this extraordinary architectural gem and the Wright-designed furnishings custom made for it.

(FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT: THE LOST YEARS, 1910-1922 is a landma...)
FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT: THE LOST YEARS, 1910-1922 is a landmark study that reconstructs Wright’s early travels to Europe, provides the definitive history of his famous Wasmuth publications, and introduces an experimental Primitivist phase in the architect’s work that followed his “First Golden Age.” Challenging conventional assumptions about influence, this pioneering work also reveals for the first time Wright’s interest in feminism that grew from his relationship with Mamah Borthwick, his doomed lover, and shows how contact with Europe in 1909-10 stimulated Wright to expand his design process and revolutionize his methods of making ornament. It reconstructs Wright’s travels in Europe and his return to America.Totally original and based on unpublished archival materials, this readable book is a landmark in studies on Frank Lloyd Wright and a significant contribution to the history of modern architecture.

( This fascinating book is the first critical examination...)
This fascinating book is the first critical examination of the East Building, I. M. Pei’s celebrated addition to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Distinguished contributors consider this iconic building from various historical vantage points, from the evolution of its design to its place in 20th-century museum architecture. Essays by Neil Harris, Anthony Alofsin, Alona Nitzan-Shiftan, and Réjean Legault discuss the building’s relationship to the city of Washington, its critical and public reception, and the special nature of its use of materials. Barry Bergdoll and David Brownlee compare it to contemporary works by Marcel Breuer, Edward Larrabee Barnes, and other modernists. Victoria Newhouse, Marc Treib, Barnabas Calder, and Andrew Saint consider it in the context of museum architecture, exploring the relationship between art installations and museum design, museum additions by other well-known architects, and the challenges of building and supporting an art museum outside a major metropolitan area. Drawings, models, and photographs provide a visual history of the building’s development.

( In When Buildings Speak,Anthony Alofsin explores the ri...)
In When Buildings Speak,Anthony Alofsin explores the rich yet often overlooked architecture of the late Austro-Hungarian Empire and its successor states. He shows that several different styles emerged in this milieu during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Moreover, he contends that each of these styles communicates to us in a manner resembling language and its particular means of expression. Covering a wide range of buildings—from national theaters to crematoria, apartment buildings to warehouses, and sanatoria to postal savings banks—Alofsin proposes a new way of interpreting this language. He calls on viewers to read buildings in two ways: through their formal elements and through their political, social, and cultural contexts. By looking through Alofsin’s eyes, readers can see how myriad nations sought to express their autonomy by tapping into the limitless possibilities of art and architectural styles. And such architecture can still speak very powerfully to us today about the contradictory issues affecting parts of the former Habsburg Empire. “The book itself as a production is spectacular.”—David Dunster, Architectural Review
