Kjer received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Concordia College in 1982. He studied at the University of Minnesota and earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree.
Kjer began his career as a director at Coon Rapids High School Marching Band in 1982. A year later he was appointed a laboratory research assistant at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and held it for three years. In 1993 Karl became a postoctoral research associate at Brigham Young University. Since 1996, he has been an assistant professor at College of Environmental and Biological Sciences, Rutgers University.
