Safjan received a Master of Laws degree in 1971 and a Ph.D. in 1980 from the University of Warsaw. He worked there from 1973.

Marek Safjan was born on August 28, 1949, in Warsaw, Poland; the son of Zbigniew Safjan.
Safjan received a Master of Laws degree from the University of Warsaw in 1971. Nine years later he earned his Ph.D. in law from the same university.
Safjan began his career an assistant at the University of Warsaw in 1973. Seven years later he took the position of a teacher at the same university. Then in 1992, Marek became a director at the Civil Law Institute of the University of Warsaw, where he worked until 1996. Also he served as a vice-rector of the University of Warsaw from 1994 to 1997. In 1998, Safjan became a professor at that university.
In addition, Marek was a secretary-general of the Polish Section of the Henri Capitant Association of Friends of French Legal Culture in 1994-1998. In 1997, he was appointed a Judge of the Constitutional Tribunal. A year later Safjan became its president and had held the position for eight years. Since 2009 he has been a Judge of the Court of Justice of the European Union.
Safjan is a member and vice-president of the International Academy of Comparative Law, member of the International Association of Law, Ethics and Science, Helsinki Committee in Poland and Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Marek Safjan is married to Doroty Safjan. They have two children.
