He joined the Socialist Party of France in 1971. He was elected to the position of General Council of Loire-Atlantique department in 1976, then he became the Mayor of Saint-Herblain in 1977. In 1986, Jean-Marc Ayrault was firstly elected to the National Assembly of France as a representative of Loire-Atlantique department.
After ending his office in Saint-Herblain in 1989, he won the election to the Mayor of Nantes. In 1997 he was appointed the leader of the French Socialist Party in the Palais Burbon, he held this post during 15 years.
Through the 2012 president campaign he endorsed François Hollande's candidature, and after his victory, Jean-Marc was appointed as Prime Minister of France in 16 May 2012.
