Francis Adams was born in Australia in a family of surgeon, Andrew Leith Adams, who became a scientist and a member of the Royal Society.

Francis graduated from Shrewsbury School, and then studied in Paris. After graduation, he joined as a teacher in a school on the Isle of Wight, where he taught for two years. In 1882 he married Helen Uttley, and with it he emigrated to Australia. In Australia, Adams dedicated himself entirely to literature.
In 1884, Francis Adams published his first collection of poems «Henry and Other Poems». In 1885 he published his autobiographical book «Leicester». While Adams was living in Sydney, he has collaborated with several Australian publications, in particular with the weekly «The Bulletin».
In 1886, Adams moved to Brisbane. It was published a collection of poetry «Poetical Works». In the same year his wife died Adams and he stayed in Brisbane before 1887. In 1887 in Sydney was published novel Adams «Madeline Brown's Murderer».
Over the years, published several novels, Francis Adams, in particular, «Songs of the Army of the Night» (1888), which became popular in Sydney and three times re-edited in London. Adams was suffering from depression caused by the hopelessness of their illness. In September 1893, he committed suicide. He invited his wife Edith (nee Goldstone) to his office, took out a gun and shot himself by putting a gun in his mouth.
