Stella Nina McCartney is a British fashion designer for her eponymous label, and rare environmentalist in the fashion industry, who does not use leather or fur in her line of clothes, and photographer. She launched her company, Stella McCartney, in 1995.
Background
Mrs. McCartney was born in Lambeth, London, England, on September 13, 1971. She is the second of three children born to ex-Beatle Paul McCartney and his late wife, Linda. She has three siblings - her sister, Mary; brother, James; and half-sister, Heather, a daughter from her mother's first marriage.
Education
Stella McCartney admits she had a "normal" childhood, despite her famous parents - though she did travel the globe with them and their group, the whole family lived in a two-bedroom while she was growing up. The McCartneys wanted their children to lead as normal lives as possible so the children attended state schools in East Sussex, one of them being Bexhill College, and grew up without bodyguards and the normal celebrity trappings. Mrs. McCartney has said that while attending state school, she was a victim of bullying, as well as being a bully herself.
She was on her own and independent by the time she was in college, making her own money (and sometimes having to clean dishes at a near-by restaurant to do so). At the age of 13, Stella constructed her first jacket. At 15, she was apprenticing at Christian Lacroix, working on his first fashion design collection. She studied her foundation at Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication and soon after was awarded a place at London's Central St. Martins College of Art & Design from which she graduated in 1995.
She was almost instantly successful, with her graduation collection being sported at the graduation show for free by good celebrity friends Kate Moss, Yasmin Le Bon and Naomi Campbell. The collection was shown to a song penned by her famous father, called "Stella May Day." The show made front-page news, and the entire collecton was sold to Tokio, a London boutique. After graduating from London's Central St. Martins College of Art & Design, London, she did a short, unofficial, apprenticeship with Edward Sexton, a Savile Row tailor.
Mrs. McCartney was presented with an honorary degree by the University of Dundee in March 2003.
In 1997 Mrs. McCartney was appointed creative director of Parisian fashion house Chloe, succeeding Karl Lagerfeld in the role. She was assisted by Phoebe Philo, who later replaced her when she left the house. In April 2001 it was confirmed that the Gucci Group (now the PPR Luxury Group) had teamed up with Stella McCartney to develop her own label as a global luxury brand. She showed her debut collection at Paris Fashion Week in October of the same year with Jude Law, Sadie Frost, Damien Hirst, Chrissie Hynde and her father, Sir Paul McCartney in the audience. The collection included the now famous T-shirt with "Bristols" emblazoned across the breasts.
In 2003 she launched her first perfume, entitled Stella. In 2004, she designed clothes for Madonna's Re-Invention tour, Annie Lennox's summer tour, and Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law's costumes for the film Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. She launched a joint-venture line with Adidas, establishing a long-term partnership with the corporation, in September 2004. The collection, called simply Adidas by Stella McCartney, has since grown to include a wide range of different sportswear including yoga, tennis, winter sports and golf.
It was announced in May 2005 that Mrs. McCartney would design a range for high street fashion giant H&M. The 40-piece collection was launched the following November and sold out immediately. In 2007 she undertook another high street collaboration, this time with Australian budget store Target. In January 2007, Mrs. McCartney launched a 100% organic skincare line called CARE. The following year she launched a successful lingerie line. In October 2009, Stella McCartney launched her first childrenswear collection for Gap Kids. She launched her second collection for Gap Kids in February 2011.
As a result of her long-running relationship with Adidas, Stella McCartney was appointed creative director of the sportswear brand's 2012 Olympic Team GB ranges in July 2010, tasked with the job of creating the label's athlete kit for both the national Olympic and Paralympic teams. The appointment was the first time a high-end designer had designed sportswear for the Olympic Games.
It was announced in November 2011 that Mrs. McCartney would showcase a one-off collection at a presentation on February 18, 2012 as part of London Fashion Week. It will be the first time she has shown in London since her graduate collection. In June 2012, Stella McCartney invited the Soul Rebels Brass Band to perform at her 2013 spring fashion presentation hosted at the New York Marble Cemetery in New York City on 11 June 2012. Other guests invited to the party included Anne Hathaway, Jim Carrey, Anna Wintour, Annie Leibovitz, Lauren Hutton, Amy Poehler, Solange Knowles, P'Trique, Greta Gerwig and André Leon Talley. Also in 2012, Mrs. McCartney was part of the book "The sustainable Fashion Handbook".
In November 2016, she launched her first menswear collection. The collection is made up of many athleisure, pyjama-like casual outfits. Mrs. McCartney said her father had provided inspiration for the collection. In April 2018, after 17 years of partnership with Kering, Stella McCartney has decided to purchase the fashion giant's stake of her company and take the reins of her global fashion empire.
Stella McCartney now operates 17 freestanding stores in locations including Manhattan’s Soho, London’s Mayfair, Los Angeles’s West Hollywood, Paris’ Palais Royal, Barcelona's Passeig de Gracia and Milan, and recently opened doors in Rome, Miami and Houston. Her collections are now distributed in over 50 countries through 600 wholesale accounts including specialty shops and department stores.
Stella McCartney is renowned for her sharp, simple tailoring with a feminine edge and considerate approach to wearable design.
Moreover, Mrs. McCartney is known to be a recipient of a number of awards for her works. She was awarded the title of Designer of the Year at the British Style Awards in November 2007. Other awards she has received include being named Glamour's Woman of the Year in 2009 and the British Fashion Council's Red Carpet Award in 2011. She was also named in the TIME 100 - a list of the 100 most influential people in the world. She was included in the Telegraph's list of the most powerful women in Britain in 2011, alongside fellow contemporaries Phoebe Philo, Anya Hindmarch and Vivienne Westwood and British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman. She was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2013 New Year Honours for services to fashion.
Stella McCartney has discussed her religion in an interview: "My Mum was Jewish. Maybe I'm a really bad Jew because I'm always so excited to say that I am, but I don't live and breathe the religion."

Mrs. McCartney is a lifelong vegetarian, doesn't use any leather or fur in her designs and supports PETA. Her hardened stance has even provoked her to criticize others who do use animal products in their work as "heartless."
