French poet, dramatist, and prose writer, was born Mar. 14, 1823, in Moulins. In 1842 he published Les Cariatides, a volume of poems that showed an early artistic talent that was to endure. He was a perfect versifier, probably the best of his generation. His "Parnassian" tendencies are seen in his attachment to technical perfection, and his originality in his avoidance of pompous subjects and moral themes.
