14 children. Ordained to ministry Congregational Church, Hartford, Connecticut, 1824. Minister 1st Congregational Church, New Haven, Connecticut, 1825-1866. An editor Christian Spectator, 1826-1838, called attention to values and heritage of New England Congregationalism.
Played leading role in resolving differences within church, especially Taylor-Tyler dispute (circa 1840), Bushnell controversy (1849). Anti-slavery advocate, but opposed extreme abolitionism. Became an editor of Independent (pro-free-soil publication), 1848.
