His nationalism, deep Slavonic sense, and inner inclination towards the As head of the nationalist school in literature, he was founded with his brother Vladimir, the periodical Kvety ("Blossoms") in 1879 to report on the cultural, political, and social movements in Czech lands. He has gained popularity in long epic poems, mostly from Czech history, among the most important of which are The Adamites (1874) and VáclavVaclav z Michalovic (1882). These works are philosophical in nature and lay special emphasis on the humanitarian and democratic ideals. He also drew subjects from the contemporary Czech life in the social story The Blacksmith of LešetínLesetin (1884) and the idyllic story In the Shade of the Linden-tree (1880). His satirical novels, Excursion of Mr. Brou ^ ekBroucek to the Moon and Excursion of Mr. Brou ^ ekBroucek to the Fifteenth Century (both 1888), were very popular, and his collections of eloquent lyrics, such as Morning Songs (1886) and New Songs (1888), in which he expressed the social and national sentiments, are of great artistic and historical value. In all his works, but especially in his great symbolic song of the slave (1895), he expressed the Czech political and social convictions and defended the Czech cause during the Austrian oppression of his nation.
