He joined the Tenth Hussars in India in 1883, served in the Sudan (1884), afterward in the Boer War (1899-1902), and in 1912 commanded the British army in Egypt. By 1909 he had been promoted to major general, and in 1914 was assigned to command the Third Cavalry Division in France. From May 1916 to June 1917 he commanded the Canadian Corps in France, where it played a major part in the capture of Vimy Ridge. From 1917 to 1919 Byng commanded the Third British Army, with the rank of full general, and gained fame for his leadership in the "battle of the tanks" at Cambrai, in November 1917. In October 1919 he was made a baron, and served as governor general of Canada from 1921 to 1926, when he was elevated to the peerage as viscount of Vimy. In 1932 he became a field marshal. He died at Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex, June 6, 1935.
