Background
He entered the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich in 1866 and was then commissioned in the army, becoming a lieutenant colonel in 1876. He served in Egypt in 1882 and was commander in chief in India from 1886 to 1890. In 1893 he was made a general and in 1900 commander-in-chief in Ireland. In 1902 he became a field marshal, from 1904 to 1907 he was inspector general of the forces, and in 1907 he was appointed commander-in-chief in the Mediterranean. He served as governor-general of Canada from 1911 to 1916 and died at Bagshot Park, Surrey, on Jan. 16, 1942.
