Falguière studied in Paris with Carrier-Belleuse and François Jouffroy.
He was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1859, and made an officer of the Legion of Honor in 1878. His work is characterized to a high degree by Naturalism. This quality is seen at its best in the spirited Cock-Fight Winner (Bucharest); in its sensuous aspects in numerous female figures, among them Diana (Luxembourg Museum); and least effectively in Lyric Poetry (Opéra-Comique, Paris), and similar monuments.
