Studied at Queen’s College Belfast. Gold medallist in Classics, and honours in Modern Languages, with Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts, Honourable Doctor of Literature of Queen’s University in Ireland.
Appointed a student interpreter in Japan, 1864. Interpreter and translator to Legation at Yedo, 1870. Assistant Japanese Secretary, Yedo, 1875-1882.
Acting Consul, Hiogo, 1880-1883. Consul-General for Corea, 1884. Japanese Secretary, Tokio, 1886.
Retired on pension, 1889.
