BRAUN, Ferdinand was born on June 6, 1850 in Fulda.
Fulda Gymnasium; Universities of Marburg am Berlin.
Graduated in 1872 with a work on the vibration of chords. Was some years a Professor of Physics in Strasburg and Karlsruhe. Tubingen University for ten years.
His best known researches are the so-called Braun’s cathoderay-tube and the wave circuit, the substantial basis of all arrangements for wireless telegraphy. He was successful in improving wireless telegraphy by inventing a method that permits the energy of the sender to be increased at will, and another method by which wireless despatches may be sent into a certain direction. He showed the identity of electric waves and light: his latest works deal with demonstrating metallic gratings so fine as not to be within the range of the microscope.
Won the Nobel Prize, 1909, together with Marconi. Professor of Physics in Strasburg University since 1895.
Climbing in the Alps, to which passion he has clung lor almost his whole life.
Spouse 1885, Amelie Bidder.
