Background
HERVEY, Dudley Francis Amelius was born on January 7, 1849 in Great Chesterford, Essex. 2nd son (e. surviving) of late Reverend Lord Charles Hervey, Doctor of Divinity, son of 1st Marquess of Bristol and Lady Harriet Charlotte Sophia, 4th daughter of 1st Earl of Harrowby.

Career
Resident Councillor at Malacca, Straits Settlements, and member of the Executive and Legislative Councils of the Colony, 1883. Took temporary charge as well of the State of Sungei Ujong, 1884. Superintended the Negri Sembilan States as well as Malacca, 1883-1886.
Retired on pension, 1893. Assisted by late A. Maclean-Skinner, Companion of St. Michael and St. George, initiated the formation of a branch at Singapore of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 1876. Is a Fellow of the Royal Colonial Institute. Justice of the Peace, Suffolk.
