Served with Naval Brigade landed for service in Soudan with Nile Expedition, 1SS4-S5. Became Lieutenant, 1885. Was Equerry and Flag Lieutenant to the Duke of Edinburgh during His (or Her) Royal Highness’s command in the Mediterranean, 1886-1889.
And afterwards at Devonport, 1890-1893. Became Commander, 1895. Was lent to Egyptian Government for service on the Nile, 1897-1898.
Commanded gunboat flotilla (despatches, after occupation of Berber, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order. Despatches after the fall of Khartoum, C. B., 1898). Became Captain 1899; Commanded His Majesty’s Ship “Rainbow,” 1900.
His Majesty’s Ship “Grafton,” 1901. Received thanks of both Houses of Parliament for services in the Soudan, June 8, 1899. S; Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1898; Royal Navy; Rear-Admiral in command of Atlantic Fleet, 1909,-1910.
