Entered Royal Navy as Assistant Surgeon, 1858. Served in His Majesty’s Ship “Royal Albert” in the Channel Squadron, and His Majesty’s Ship “Marlborough” in the Mediterranean. Was on duty in Athens during the revolution in which King Otto lost the throne.
Served as one of the medical officers of Greenwich Hospital. And afterwards in His Majesty’s Ship “Challenger” on the Australian station. Settled in Sydney and became President of the Board of Health, 1885.
Vice-Chancellor of the University, 1887. Member of the Legislative Council, 1889. Vice-President of the Executive Council, 1893. Chancellor of the University of Sydney since 1896.
