1880 graduate Department of Physics and Mathematics, Novorossiysk University. 1883 graduate Military Medical Academy.
1886 together with I. 1. Mechnikov and North. F. Gamaleya established first Russian anti-rabies station in Odessa, which later became the Mechnikov Bactcrioloical Institute. 1895 introduced first independent Russian course for training associate professor at Novorossisk University.
This later became the Chair of Microbiology, which he headed until his death. Chairman, Odessa Sciences Medical Social. Honorary member, Saint St. Petersburg Microbiological Social.
One of first to support Mechnikov’s phagocyte theory. Developed hypothesis that immunity depends on the active reaction of the body’s cells, particularly the cellular elements of certain organs (e.g. the spleen), which ’’learn” to absorb bacteria and produce antidotes. 1891 began research on production of diphtheria vaccine and developed successful techniques independently of Behring and Roux.
