DOGEL’, Aleksandr was born on January 27, 1852.
1879 graduate Medical Faculty, Kazan’ University.
1878 while still a student did research on innervation of the ureter under K. A. Arnshteyn. 1881 was awarded a scholarship to prepare for professorship at Kazan’ University. 1883 defended doctor’s thesis on the structure of the retina in ganoids and was sent abroad for further specialist training.
From 1885 dissector and lecturer, Chair of Histology, Kazan’ University. 1888-1895 head, Chair of Histology, Tomsk University, where he established a first-class histological laboratory. From 1895 until death professor
Chair of Histology, Saint St. Petersburg University. From 1897 simultaneously professor, Saint St. Petersburg YVomen’s Medical Institute. Specialized in the histology of the nervous system and the sense organs.
He, his pupil and his successors (V. F. Martynov, A. V. Nemilov, Doctorate. I. Deynek, etc) discovered and described almost all the forms of nerve endings in the tissues and organs of verebrates known to modern histology. Obtained dato on innvervation of the skin, muscles, glands, heart and other human and animal organs. These findings are of particular importance for the physiology of interoccption.
His research on sensory innvervation of the heart was acclaimed by I. P. Pavlov. Studied the fine structure of sensory and vegetative nerve ganglia, explained their interrelationship and detected pericellular plexi belonging to the sympathetic nerve fibers. Established the presence of three types of neurons in vegetative ganglia and demonstrated the effector nature of the Dogel’ Type 1 cell.
This research provided a basis for the study of synapses in the vegetative nervous system. Contributed to the study of evolutionary histology with his research on the philogcnesis of the nervous system and sense organs. Developed method of supravital staining of nerve elements with methylene blue (Dogel' method).
From 1903 member and Russian representative, International Association for the Study of the Nervous System. 1915 founded journal Russkiy arkhiv anatomii, gistologii i embriologii. Wrote over 100 sci and popular works.
