Studied at Saint St. Petersburg Institute of Technology Later at Moscow’s Petrine Agriculture and Forestry Academy.
Took an active part in populist movement. To avoid arrest went underground. Displayed exceptional courage, energy and resourcefulness.
1877 liberated from Odessa Prison the populist V. Kostyurin. 1878, obtaining the post of a Kiev prison guard, liberated the populists Ya. V. Stefanovich, L. G. Deych and 1.
V. Bokhanovskiy; the same year tried to liberate P. 1. Voynaral’skiy; 1879 helped the populist F. North. Yurkovskiy to undermine the Kherson Treasury. 1879, after the schism in the Zemlya i volya (Land and Freedom) movement, joined the Narodnaya volya (People's Will) fraction and was a member of its exec comt.
Helped prepare several attempts on the life of Alexander 11. 1881 arrested; 1882 sentenced to death. Sentence commuted to hard labor for life.
Imprisoned in Peter and Paul and Shlisscl’burg Fortresses until 1905. 1905 released, but until 1917 remained under police surveillance. From 1922 lived in Moscow.
