ISAAKYAN, Avetik was born on October 30, 1875 in village Kazarapat, near Aleksandropol’ (now Leninakan).

1889-1892 studied at Echmiadzin Theological Seminary. 1893-1895 studied at Leipzig University.
1892 first work published. 1893 moved to Germany and attended Leipzig University, studying lit, history and philosophy. Toured Italy and Greece.
1895 interrupted studies due to family circumstances and returned home. A year later arrested for antitsarist activities. After release from prison published first collection of verse.
Most of his works were cither entirely banned or drastically cut by the tsarist censorship. 1911 emigrated and lived in Constantinople, Geneva, Berlin and Paris. 1930-1936 favored Soviet regime.
1926 returned to Soviet Armenian 1936 returned permanently to Paris. Member, Soviet Peace Committee.
1946-1957 chairman, Arm Writers’ Union. Deputy, Arm Supreme Soviet of 2nd and 4th convocations.
Member. Arm Academy of Sciences from 1943.
