1886 graduate Natural Sciences Department, Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, Saint St. Petersburg University. 1 893 graduate Medical Faculty, Moscow University.
After graduate Saint St. Petersburg University worked at I. M. Sechenov’s physiological laboratory. Twice arrested for involvement with Doctorate. North. Blagoyev’s SocDemocratic group and sent under police escort to Cherdyn', Permanent’ Province. Later transferred to Permanent’, where he worked first as assistant, then director, former local government authority Health Laboratory.
1890 entered Medical Faculty, Moscow University and worked simultaneously at Professor F. F. Erisman’s Hygiene Institute. After graduate stayed on at Moscow University to prepare for professorship. From 1896 professor of hygiene, Yur’yev (Tartu) University.
1903 head, Chair of Hygiene, Novorossiysk University, Odessa: 1904-1906 head Chair of Hygiene, Saint St. Petersburg Women's Medical Institute. 1906-1918 head, Chair of Hygiene, Saint St. Petersburg Institute of Postgraduate Medical Training.
1918-1929 head Chair of Hygiene, Petrograd (Leningrad) Military Medical Academy. Ranked with F. F. Erisman and A. P. Dobroslavin as one of the foremost pioneers of Russian hygiene. Did research on water hygiene, including the effect of petroleum products on river fish and the quality of the water of the Volga.
Studied the composition and properties of coal-tar paints and their effect on the human body. Conducted experiments on labor hygiene and occupational diseases in the chemical and ore-mining industry. Helped to develop principles of sanitary-chemical protection.
Wrote over 140 works, including 25 on hygiene research methods.
