1919 began to study acting at 2nd Studio, Moscow Arts Theater.
From 1924 actor, Moscow Academy Arts Theater. Was strongly influenced by Stanislavsky and NemirovichDanchenko. From 1932 founder-director, Moscow Theater-Studio.
1937-1945 artistic director, Yermolova Theater, Moscow, with which his Theater-Studio merged. 1943-1945 artistic director, Moscow Academy Arts Theater. Also taught acting and performed in films.
