During World War 1 active service on the Caucasian Front. Early 1918 founded Red Guard mounted squad which he led in numerous battles against White troops in the Northern Caucasus, then commanded 3rd Kuban’ Cavalry Brigade, 11th Army. Brave and resolute commander with excellent command of partisan tactics.
February 1919 the 11th Army was disbanded because of demoralization by order of the Revol Military Committee of the Caspian-Caucasian Front. The 3rd Kuban’ Cavalry Brigade was hereby also subject to disbandment, but Kochubey refused to carry out the order for which he was relieved of his command and his brigade disarmed. Tried to get to Prikum’ye to found a partisan detachment but was captured by the Whites and refused to side with them.
