1898-1905 worked as schoolteacher in Siberia. 1910-1916 associate, from 1916 associate professor Psychological Institute, Moscow University.
From 1918 propagandist. From 1920 member. State Learned Council, Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic People's Commissariat of Education. 1921 founded Pedagogical Faculty, Moscow University, which was expanded into the State Lenin Teachers’ Training Institute.
Became dean and head, Chair of Psychology at this institute 1923-1930 and 1938-1941 director Psychological Research Institute.
1923-1957 deputy, Moscow Soviet. 1923 and 1924 read papers at 1st and 2nd All-Russian Psychoneurological Congresses, Moscow, on the necessity of reorganizing psychology’ on the basis of dialectical materialism. Criticized G. I. Chelpanov’s school of psychology.
1931 criticized for adhering to mechanistic concepts, for striking a compromise between subjectivism and objectivism and for committing ideological errors. 1944-1950 vice-prcs, Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic Academy of Pedagogical Sciences. 1945-1956 ed, journal Sem'ya ishkola.
1955-1957 member, ed collegium, journal Voprosy psikhologii. Wrote over 100 works on psychology and pedag, notably on will-power training.
