1907-1914 associate professor, from 1914 professor of plant anatomy and physiology, Saint St. Petersburg University. 1922-1923 correspondent member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. From 1923 director, State Institute of Experimental Agronomy (from 1930 Institute of Agric Microbiology', All-Union Lenin Academy of Agric Sciences).
Studied chemism of respiration and fermentation, nitrogen metabolism of yeasts and mold funghi, air nutrition of higher plants, et cetera Wrote phytophysiology course, translated into German and English, and monograph on plant respiration.
