Self-educated.
From 1890 worked as roller, gas fitter and furnace chief at various metallurgical plants in south of Russia. Taught himself physics, chemistry, laboratory techniques, several for languages, history and philosophy. Also took an interest in soc and economics problems.
After acquiring a thorough knowledge of blast-furnace techniques was made mang of the blast-furnace plant at Kramatorsk Metallurgical Works. 1905 exiled to Vologda Province for involvement in revol and spent two years there, after which he was kept under permanent police surveillance. 1908 returned to Donbas.
At outbreak of 1917 October Revol joined sov of workers and peasants’ deputy at Yuzov Plant, Donbas. Later that year began planning and construction of Kuznetsk Metallurgical Plant. Made a number of improvements to existing blast-furnaces.
1903 designed first Russian inclined elevator with automatic distribution of furnace charge. Developed original design for a blast-furnace hearth which is now in common use in Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. Introduced improved blast box and four types of standardized section-shaped refractory bricks for furnace repair work.
