1899 drafted into Russian Navy. 1902 and 1903 twice arrested for political activities. 1904-1905 took part in Admiral Z. P. Rozhestvcnskiy’s squadron's cruise from Kronstadt to the Sea of Japan, leading to naval engagement with Japanese fleet in Tsushima Strait.
Taken prisoner by Japanese. Engaged in anti-government propaganda among prisoners-of-war. 1906 returned to Russia.
1 April 1906 newspaper “Novoye vremya” printed his first lit work, an account of the sinking of the battleship “Borodino” in the Battle of Tsushima. 1907 — 13 political emigre in Spain, Italy and North Africa. Shipped with merchant ships.
1913 returned to Russia on someone else’s passport. From 1917 concentrated on lit work. During World War 2 wrote patriotic articles and essays.
