1903-1907 assistant professor, Saint St. Petersburg University. 1907 — 10 did research at Sorbonne. 1912-1916 associate professor, from 1916 professor, Saint St. Petersburg (Leningrad) University.
1915-1918 also, director, Physics Institute, Petrograd University. 1918-1932 founder-director, State Optical Institute. Also headed various research laboratories.
1909 devised widely used method of determining anomalous dispersion in the vapors of various metals (“crutch method”). Also contributed to the theory and systematics of atomic spectra. Hypothesized the magnetic origin of spectral doublets and triplets.
Also worked on microscope theory. Helped to organize Soviet optical industry.
