1915 graduate Medical Faculty, Moscow University.
From 1915 served as regt physician at the front in World War 1. Then intern, evacuation hospital in Tula. Then at Zakhar’ino Sanatorium.
1922-1928 headed a surgical department at a factory hospital in Serpukhov, where he began his research work. 1928-1954 chief surgeon, Sklifosovskiy First Aid Institute. Moscow; pioneered radical surgery for gastric ulcers.
Devised many gastric and duodenal operations. Introduced and popularized drip blood transfusion. 1930 first to use for transfusion purposes the blood from the corpses of people who had met a sudden death.
In time the transfusion of corpse blood became standard medical practice. Speciali zed in restorative surgery for esophagal blockage resulting from chemical burns and performed over 600 operations of this kind. Devised new methods for forming an artificial esophagus.
Contributed to military field surgery. Pioneered and organized anesthcsiological service in Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. 1931-1954 head, Chair of Urgent Surgery, Centr Institute of Postgraduate Medical Training.
Apllied results of Pavlovian Experiments with animals to humans, opening up new vistas in clinical physiology. Wrote over 120 works.
