Left his country in 1874 to join the band of missionaries of Mill-Hill, London, North-west. After three years’ study of theology he joined, as Catholic chaplain, the forces of the Generals Roberts and Stewart in Afghanistan, and went through the campaign of 1S7S- 80 (despatches, Afghan medal, Ahmed Khel clasp). Joined the Madras mission, where he worked for nine years, and established three schools and two convents.
In 1899 he was called back to Europe to establish a missionary college in Holland in connection with the MillHill College.
Was its first rector till 1901, when 16 he was nominated auxiliary bishop to the Archbishop of Madras. Titular Bishop of Temisonia since 1901, and Coadjutor Bishop of Madras, with right of succession, since 1902.
