CHURCH, Samuel Harden was born on January 24, 1858 in Caldwell County, Missouri, United States. Son of William Church and Emily, daughter of Walter Scott, who emigrated from Scotland to Pennsylvania in 1819.

Studied at Pittsburgh public schools and Bethany Preparatory School, in West Virginia.
After filling various clerkships with the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, he was made Superintendent of Transportation in Columbus, Ohio, and later Secretary in Pittsburgh. Received the honorary degrees Doctor of Laws, Doctor of Letters and Master of Arts from Pittsburgh, Yale and Western Pennsylvania Universities. Is Vice-President of the Union Steel Casting Company.
A trustee of the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (United States.). Was speaker in Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania for National Republican Committee in 1896 and 1900. Delegate to Republican National Convention in 1904. Railway official and author.
